Amid a runoff race that has been largely collegial, Denver mayoral candidate Mike Johnston and his campaign are fuming over a TV ad paid for by an outside spending group backing Kelly Brough that accuses Johnston of lying about his accomplishments.Claims that Johnston has oversold his record to boost his mayoral credentials have become one of the main points of attack on the candidate who finished first in the April 4 general election and has a fundraising advantage in the runoff. The 30-second spot sponsored by the Brough-backing independent expenditure committee A Better Denver opens with the line “Mike Johnston is lying about his leadership.” It accuses Johnston of lying about his role in the state’s testing program for COVID-19 and for lying about his claims that he took on gun lobbyists to pass gun control when he was serving as a state senator. The ad first aired on May 17 and drew a swift response from the Johnston camp. On Friday, May 19 former Denver Mayor F...Weight watching, injury dangers, caustic feedback add to mental health woes for horse racing jockeys

By STEPHEN WHYNO (AP Sports Writer)BALTIMORE (AP) — Eurico Rosa da Silva was in a dark place. On the track, the jockey in his early 30s was winning races and making money. At home, he was fighting suicidal thoughts every day.“I got to the point where I have no more choice but to go for help,” he recalled recently. “I went because if I have no choice, I would kill myself.”Da Silva got help in 2006 and rode for more than a decade before retiring. He’s one of the lucky ones.Earlier this year, horse racing was stunned by the suicides less than six weeks apart of two young jockeys, 23-year-old Avery Whisman and 29-year-old Alex Canchari. A friend of Whisman’s, Triple Crown-winning rider Mike Smith, said he has seen similar tragedies over three decades.“I know several riders that I knew very well committed suicide when it was all said and done,” Smith said. “This is not all of a sudden just happening. It’s been going on. Yo...East Los Angeles principal on leave after controversial remarks spark student protests

Generations have grown up on the falafels and fresh banana shakes at Falafel’s Drive-In, the popular eatery that has been a San Jose institution for nearly 60 years.Co-owner Joanne Boyle grew up there too, hanging out with her siblings at the casual restaurant their parents, Anton and Zahie Nijmeh, opened in 1966 after moving to the Bay Area from Israel.“I was crawling around here as a baby,” Boyle says.Boyle can still be found at the family-run eatery most days, doing prep work in the kitchen and taking food orders from a long line of devoted regulars and their friends. Those orders include other Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean dishes, as well as classic American fast-food fare. But the falafel sandwiches — falafel, tahini, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and the eatery’s signature red hot sauce wrapped in pita — are the big draw, best enjoyed at one of the picnic tables with a view of Lila Gemellos’ colorful murals. The Special, a falafel sandwich and a banana m...Steph Curry wins NBA’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar social justice award
