Residents were asked to report any broken web links and non-functioning phone numbers by emailing [email protected] or calling City Hall at 510-583-4300.City officials still had no evidence or reason to believe “at this stage” that the personal information of any city employees or the general public had been obtained or breached in the attack, said Chuck Finnie, a city spokesperson. If such a breach is found, Finnie said the city will contact the affected people directly. The city detected the cyber in...

Bay Area cocktails: 4 fun spins on classic summer drinks

Bay Area cocktails: 4 fun spins on classic summer drinks “That’s not how you make an Old Fashioned,” every bartender everywhere will hear someday. It’s as inevitable as the gin martini drinker saying gin is the only “proper” ingredient in a martini — as if it’s impossible to ever improve upon something.Pomegranate adds color and a unique flavor to a Cosmopolitan. Photo by Vern FisherSo, with the heat of summer fully arrived, I decided to take a couple of iconoclastic swings at a few summer classics. And while it would be monumentally audacious to ever offer writing advice to Ian Fleming or Ernest Hemingway, I feel pretty comfortable offering cocktail advice. But before we embark on that journey, we must first assume that, in some cases, adding one ingredient (or removing one) doesn’t irrevocably change a drink’s identity (ahem, the vodka martini versus the gin martini) and in that construct, we aren’t really bucking tradition, but rather following it, right? Here are four classics “fixed” by the addition of one new ingredient, al...

On Saturday, the animal shelter issued a "Code Red" community notice to inform the public that the shelter was completely full. Dog kills beloved cat in San Jose, owner demands accountability Shelter staff hoped that this alert might prompt owners of missing pets to pick up their animals and encourage potential adopters to find new pets at the shelter. The shelter decided to waive the majority of their usual fees to ensure missing pets were reunited with their owners. They also offered special, low-cost adoption prices for dogs and cats -- $50 for dog adoptions and $20 for cat adoptions. While the shelter had positive turnout in response to these measures, they ended the day with only seven open kennels. They have decided to continue the adoption special Tuesday. Trump Revives “Muslim Ban” While GOP Courts Muslim Voters for 2024

Trump Revives “Muslim Ban” While GOP Courts Muslim Voters for 2024 The culture war raging throughout American politics has, of late, created an unexpected alliance between the Republican Party and some conservative Muslim Americans. Once derided as terrorist fifth columnists, a growing number of Muslims have joined the GOP base in protests opposing sex and gender education programs in public schools, with many even featured sympathetically on outlets like Fox News. The shift represents a stark contrast with the hostile relations between Republicans and Muslims over the past two decades, as well as the integration of many younger Muslim Americans into progressive politics. The GOP’s outreach, reported on recently by Semafor and other outlets, also comes at a moment when the current Republican presidential frontrunner is tripling down on the most directly anti-Muslim government policy in U.S. history: the so-called Muslim ban.At a campaign speech in Iowa last Friday, former President Donald Trump promised that he would bring back the controversial pol...

Investigators say a broken part in the landing gear prevented a Delta plane from landing normally WASHINGTON (AP) — Investigators say a broken part prevented pilots of a Delta plane from lowering the nose landing gear before landing last month in Charlotte, North Carolina. The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday that it sent the fractured part, called a lock link, to its laboratory for examination as it investigates the June 28 incident. The NTSB said when the upper lock link broke, it allowed the lower lock link to swing down and prevent the landing gear assembly from moving.Maintenance records for the Boeing 717 have been “quarantined and will be subject to review,” the NTSB said. The plane was built in 2000, according to Federal Aviation Administration records. The NTSB said the pilots of the flight from Atlanta tried several times to lower the landing gear while they circled the Charlotte airport twice to trouble-shoot the problem. Air traffic controllers told the crew they couldn’t see the nose wheel. The pilots were able to land the plane safely, slid...
