Maggie West is known for prismatic work that innovatively brings her vibrant photography practice into large scale, public art, new media installations, and elevated NFTs. Although intimate and organic in subject—kissing couples, evocative portraits, fractal gemstones, blooming flowers, greening stalks—her work shines in books and on gallery walls, as well as in monumental murals, digital video, and generative light-backed platforms and installations. From the Pop goddess overlooking the new Netflix plaza, to screens above the city streets—and this year, the Coachella Music & Art Festival concourse’s first ever photo installation—West has a gift for translating her love for the power of color into the allure of experiential images. A house in Mammoth Lakes was destroyed by an explosion Saturday — 10 days after a similar blast a mile away injured five people. The weekend’s blast happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday on Juniper Road, a loop of single-family homes near Mammoth Mountain ski resort’s Eagle Express lift. The house was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported, the Mammoth Lakes Police Department said. The resulting fire and the snowmelt flooding caused by that fire prompted the evacuation of nearby residences, including condos at the Eagle Run complex. On March 22, an explosion caused the collapse of a building at the Val d’Isere Condominiums, near the Mammoth Village commercial area. Three people were trapped and had to be extricated; five people were injured, one of them critically. No announcement has been made about the cause of either blast, but police and fire officials have warned residents to make sure their propane tanks, pipes and valves are free of snow and ice, whic...A California attorney has been in a Venezuela prison for a year. His family wants him home

It’s been one year since Eyvin Hernandez has hugged his family. It’s been one year since he’s been home. And it’s been one year since the Los Angeles County public defender has been able to argue for a defendant’s innocence.Except this time, Hernandez is the defendant.Hernandez, a criminal defense attorney who grew up in the South Bay, was arrested at the Venezuelan-Colombian border a year ago while on a two-week vacation. Since then, he has been detained in a Venezuelan cell, with his family and the United States government describing Hernandez as a wrongfully detained political prisoner. His loved ones have also described the Los Angeles resident’s living conditions as dire – and they want him back home as soon as possible. That’s why Hernandez’s family and friends, about 40 people in all, gathered in front of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, in downtown Los Angeles, last week to publicly urge the U.S. government – President Joe Biden in particular – to help bring ...Donald Trump's Holy Week Indictment Is an Anti-Christian Parable

NEW YORK (AP) — McDonald’s has closed its U.S. offices for a few days as the company prepares to inform corporate employees about layoffs, according to a published report. The Wall Street Journal cited an internal email from the Chicago fast-food giant saying U.S. corporate staff and some employees overseas should work from home while the company notifies people of their job status. McDonald’s declined to comment on the report early Monday. The report said McDonald’s would inform its employees this week about staffing decisions that are part of a broad restructuring of the company announced earlier. Though the U.S. labor market remains strong, layoffs have been mounting, mainly in the technology sector, where many companies over-hired after a pandemic boom. IBM, Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, Facebook parent Meta, Twitter and DoorDash have all announced layoffs in recent months. There have been cuts in other sectors as well. Yet most of those job cuts are at corporate offices. There a...No April Fools’ prank: Jogger has close encounter with cow

FARMINGTON, Maine (AP) — A Maine jogger encountered an angry cow, and it was no joke. The Farmington Police Department shared details of the encounter on April Fools’ Day, a day after the actual encounter, and assured that this was no prank. The 43-year-old woman was preparing for a jog on the Whistle Stop Trail when she was charged by the cow, which had escaped from a farm. JERUSALEM (AP) — Iran appears to have been behind the launch of a drone that was shot down over Israeli airspace this week, the Israeli military said Monday. The army announced its conclusions on Monday, a day after air force helicopters and fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the drone when it entered Israeli territory from Syria. There were no casualties in the incident, but it added to the already heightened tensions between the two arch-enemies.The interception happened shortly after Iranian state media reported that an Iranian adviser who was wounded in an Israeli airstrike in Syria over the weekend had died of his wounds. That made him the second Iranian adviser allegedly killed by Israel in recent days.Last week, Greece announced the arrest of two Pakistani operatives it said were planning an attack on a Jewish center in Athens. Israel has said Iran was behind the plot. The Israeli military said Monday an initial inquiry determined the intercepted drone was Iranian. CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — There was an “obvious mistake” in the process to deny Oscar Pistorius parole last week and the former Olympic runner is seeking to overturn that decision and have a new hearing to be considered for early release from prison as soon as possible, his lawyer told The Associated Press on Monday.“I’m confident that common sense will prevail,” lawyer Julian Knight said, claiming that Pistorius was not given credit in his parole application for an extra year and four months he has served in prison after being convicted of murder for the 2013 shooting of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The 36-year-old Pistorius was denied parole on Friday because he hasn’t served the minimum amount of jail time required, a parole board said, a surprise reasoning that prompted criticism of the Department of Corrections for holding the hearing at all if Pistorius wasn’t eligible. The parole board ruled that he will only be eligible in August 2024.PistoriusR...Close title race exposing tensions at Bayern Munich

BERLIN (AP) — Bayern Munich is back on top of the Bundesliga after beating main rival Borussia Dortmund but the closest title race in years is exposing uncharacteristic tensions at the Bavarian powerhouse.Bayern chief executive Oliver Kahn and former player Lothar Matthäus delivered a heated exchange Saturday before the team’s win over Dortmund with Kahn angrily defending the club’s treatment of Julian Nagelsmann, who was fired as coach the week before. Kahn acknowledged it had been a “catastrophe” that Nagelsmann learned of his dismissal from the media and not from the club directly but denied Bayern club was at fault, saying it had tried several times to reach him. Nagelsmann was on vacation at the time during the international break. The coach’s management team later contradicted Kahn’s account, telling Sky TV that it heard nothing from the club before telephoning Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić for an explanation after seeing the media reports of Nagelsmann’s fi...Latest news
